  1. Departmental Mission :

The general mission of the department is to contribute to the overall mission of the college by imparting learning in the field of History.

In a broader sense, the mission of the department is to discover and re-discover through learning and practice the racial, provincial, national as well as international traditions and thereby help the students to think and work for the progress and prospects of human resources.

  1. Departmental Objectives :

The immediate objectives of the department is –

  1. To complete the curriculum in time.
  2. To give them first hand knowledge of the subject by doing field works, educational tours, group discussions, seminar, lectures etc.
  3. To attract the students to Major course in History so that the students can avail themselves a specialized study of the subject in the future.
  4. In these days of multidisciplinary programmes, the department shall make efforts to bring about the realization of the importance of the subject of History to the students.
  1. Its achievements so far :

Since 2000 the department has extended its learning method to include the learning by doing method. This has included a visit to the State Museum and Ambari excavation site. In 2003 and in 2013 the students were taken to Sivasagar on an educational tour. In 2013 B.A. Part iii Exam under G.U. Nazlin  Momtaz Ahmed secured 1st class in History (Major). She was the first student of History (Major) to secure first class from this Department. On 24/03/2014 the History (Major) students were taken to Tezpur on an Education tour.

  1. Its History and historical performance :

The department was established along with the establishment of the college in 1978. The full name of the first faculty member is not available. The next faculty member Dr. Prativa Thakuria joined in 1979. The other faculty member was Miss Devi Choudhury, who’s date of joining is not available. She however left the college in 1991. Mr. Ratul Borah joined in 1990.  Mrs. Nazneed Ara Rehman joined in 1993.Dr. P. Thakuria has retired on 2003 as HOD and since then Mr. Ratul Borah was HOD till 31/12/2012. Since 01/01/2013 Mr. Pankaj Kr. Kathar became the HOD and

continuing till today.After receiving deficit- grant-in-aid in 1992 the department has had three sanctioned posts. Prior to that as there were no sanctioned post, the department was managed by two faculty members. After the retirement of Dr. P. Thakuria, one post has remained vacant till 31.01.2012 and classes are being managed by using the services of part time teachers. However on 01.02.2012 Mr. P.K. Kathar an Associate Prof. joined the department. Earlier he was serving in Bajali College.

Name of the Part time teachers from 1998 :

(i)                 Rakhi Chakravarty for two years (1998-99, 1999-2000)

(ii)               Karabi Das is continuing since 2000 till date

(iii)              Nayanmani Das for three months on maternity leave vacancy of Miss N.A. Rehman.

(iv)             Rajashree Nath Since 2008 to 2014

 

  1. Admission Process:

Students are admitted on general merit basis in the college and the willing students are enrolled in the department.

  1. Internal Assessment System :

Internal assessment system was confined to conduct of unit tests and Sessional Examination.

  1. Facilities and Assets :

One departmental library with more than 60 books.

  1. Seminar / Workshops attended and organized :

No national and international seminar / workshop were organized by the Deptt. But group discussions and Departmental seminars for students were organized monthly. As faculty members, we helped in organizing

 

the state level Talk on Library and Information Science held in the college on 3.5.2003.

The faculty members attended national and international seminars / workshops at the individual level.

  1. Strategy of the Department for future :

The strategy of the department for future is to work for the academic development of students by adopting the following measures :-

(i)                 To organize seminar of students and guest lecture for students.

(ii)               To continue the exercises for learning by doing method such as conduct of surveys and field studies and report and Project preparation there on.

(iii)              Faculty members will continue to attend seminar /R.C.S. for faculty development. The department will try to organize seminar for faculty development of all members of the college.

  1. Teaching Techniques :

The department has supplemented the conventional lecture method of teaching with the introduction of learning by doing methods. But from 2012 modern teaching aids like Laptop and Projectors for power point presentation are used.  Group discussions and educational tours and report preparations have been introduced.

  1. Journal :

A yearly research journal “Itibritta” has been published on May 2013. The students of the department, faculties of the college have contributed with their valuable/resourceful writings in the journal.

  1. Academic Counselling :

Important academic counseling both inside and outside the classroom have always been undertaken by all the faculty members.

Students from the College participated in All Guwahati Ridip Dutta Memorial Chords competition and won the 2nd prize on 26.10.2014.
